This came out really well, Chris! I also love that you referenced tsundoku which is also very much part of my existence. I would do well to transfer the energy and enthusiasm from the purchase of a book to its receipt in order to get the most out of it. I’m still working on the perfectionism that won’t allow me to publish something that I want to tinker with a bit longer. I tell myself it’s like a stew that I’m still working on. My writing gumbo. But I think the ki is strongest for sure when first engaging with the idea instead of allowing it to languish.

These are helpful and timely reminders. Especially about working with our nature. I think I’m finally tired of beating myself up and ready to work with myself again nat wad of against me. It for sure will overcome some of that inertia.

Thank you for sharing!

I think the longer a piece is, the longer it needs to cook. Like stewing a tough piece of meat! But I still think it pays to get the first draft done quickly. The real cooking process is in getting feedback and putting it through multiple drafts.

Then again, I agree it's important to work with your nature. Maybe your nature is to keep tinkering with that gumbo. A lot of great writers in the past have written slowly and produced amazing literature that way.

I’m so glad to hear I’m not the only one who wants more down time...(maybe I’m more like a dog though). I have recently been giving myself more space and here’s what I notice. The things I really care about doing (writing, teaching yoga and mindfulness) get better. All the rest of that doing stuff isn’t really so important anyway.

This was so helpful, Chris! "Sushi Chef Principle" is so evocative and memorable--I want to keep this idea in my back pocket for prepping class (and D&D sessions if I ever have the chance to DM again!) I see some synergies with your "procrastination as emotion regulation" article. Finding when my energy is at the right level to design a lesson can be tricky for me because I really do need that energy to come regularly and on schedule. Related to your procrastination article, I'm experimenting with aligning my course prep with my values so that my energy levels can sustain at a higher level for longer.

I love the idea of aligning your course prep with your values! The way I see it, our level of motivation is mostly outside our control. But taking action aligned with our values is within our control.
