Good morning, and welcome to Mindful Mondays! Have you noticed the smell of freshly-sharpened pencils in the air? That can only mean one thing—summer is coming to a close (though we still have three weeks to go) and students are going back to school.
As a kid, I was never fond of school, but I’ve always loved learning. I’ve also always loved school supplies, whether it was a fresh box of crayons in kindergarten or the Leuchtturm1917 notebooks and Japanese pens I favor today. As a writer, these are the tools of my trade, and most of my ideas start as handwritten notes and mind-maps before they become Substack posts.
Though my own school years are in the past (for now, anyway), my daughter is starting her senior year of high school and working on college applications. And as for me, I’m always learning something new. (Just recently, I read Rick Smith’s How to Master Self-Hypnosis in a Weekend and was in and out of trance for two days!)
What are you looking forward to learning this fall? Let me know by replying to this email or leaving a comment on Substack.
Previously on Mindful Mondays
In the last four weeks, I’ve published four more essays, sharing the productivity secrets of sushi chefs, knowing yourself as awareness, and how to change memories in the brain, as well as some personal reflections on a place that fostered my own growth. If you missed any of these essays, now is your chance to catch up!
Podcast I’m Listening To
Seth Godin — The Pursuit of Meaning, The Life-Changing Power of Choosing Your Attitude, Overcoming Rejection, Life Lessons from Zig Ziglar, and Committing to Making Positive Change (#672): In this episode of the Tim Ferriss show, marketing guru Seth Godin talks about getting older, accepting limitations, Viktor Frankl, what we can do about climate change, and the importance of prioritizing meaning and significance in your work, both for yourself and your team. I highly recommend this one, especially for entrepreneurs and business owners.

I always love reading your posts. This fall I’m looking forward to learning more about the night sky as well as the wisdom we can learn from indigenous and ancient cultures... I’m also looking forward to improving my time management 🤞🏼
Love this, including the bits about your Leuchtturm1917 notebooks and Japanese pens! This fall I'm looking forward to continue writing and exploring how I can take this Substack to new levels. Excited to see you along this journey.
