From a coaching perspective, I think the most important point Matt makes is about bias to action. Ending each conversation with at least one clear to-do item to follow up on is fundamental. From a CEO perspective, he has a lot of good ideas about hiring. One thing he talked about that I have *not* heard from others is how useful the chief-of-staff position can be and how to use shadowing to help train someone for that.
I listened to the Tim Ferriss podcast a few weeks ago doing day 9 of the Pennine Way. The advice Matt Michael gives about hiring people is excellent!
I know he coaches CEOs but I found his coaching style overly directive. It’s not my style and many will like it, but I do wonder how much of the thinking that a client might generate themselves - from their own yet-to-be-uncovered ideas and resources is squashed with such an approach.
Would love to chat about that EFT course you’re doing!
Hi Eric! I've actually always wanted to do one of those long walks in northern England.
I agree that Matt's coaching style was quite directive. I wonder how different what he did on the podcast was from what he would do in a longer private session. I can see where with CEOs, there could be a lot of value in sharing his own best practices for running a company. The part that turned me off, on the other hand, was when he assumed Tim was wrong about potential risks. I would be much more curious to delve into that and find out where Tim was coming from.
Hey Chris! What was your biggest takeaway from the podcast? I’m thinking of listening to it ..

I really like that Wendell Berry poem, especially the few prior lines:
Geese appear high over us,
pass, and the sky closes. Abandon,
as in love or sleep, holds
them to their way, clear
in the ancient faith: what we need
is here.
Ah, that's beautiful. Thank you, Lucy!
